Psalm 35 portrays the story of a man betrayed by his friends. However, despite the sadness and frustration, David relies on God to be his salvation.

In Psalm 35, David finds himself betrayed by those who he thought were his his closest friends and confidants. David starts the Psalm asking God to fight on behalf of him. He asks God to encourage and strengthen his soul: "Say to my Soul, 'I am your Salvation."

The betrayal is most potently described in vs. 11-16, as he recounts how his betrayers repay him evil for the good that he has shown them. He remembers how when they were in vulnerable positions, or facing sickness, he prayed and fasted for them, and treated them like family. But during times of testing for him, they rejoice at his suffering.

David asks God to frustrate the plans of those who are seeking his destruction. If the plans of his enemies do not come to pass, David knows that God is the one who has worked salvation on his behalf. He is confident that when this happens, he will sing praises to God and rejoice in the salvation and the strength of God.

Let those who delight in my righteousness shout for joy and be glad and say evermore, "Great is the Lord who delights in the welfare of his servant!" - Psalm 35:27

Despite his feelings of betrayal, David rest assured that there are those that delight in his righteousness. Other translations replace the word righteousness for "vindication" or "salvation". But regardless, this verse reminds us that there are those that delight to see you live a righteous life. This could be parents, this could be siblings, mentors, extended family, pastors, or friends. They are rooting for you to maintain the course of holiness and are encouraged when you maintain righteousness even when the odds are stacked against you.

During times of betrayal, during times of stumbling or testing, let us remember these people. Let us be encouraged by their steadfast support of us. These people will rejoice when they see your salvation come to fulfillment, and they will glorify and exalt the God who delivers it. What a promise to look forward to. Even in betrayal, suffering, trials and tribulations, God brings joy to our genuine supporters and He is glorified when His salvation is revealed.
